The Black Pearl Cafe Story
The Black Pearl Cafe was founded in 2011 by Joey and Paul, inspired by a shared passion for great coffee, bubble tea, and the idea of creating something refreshingly different.
Our journey began with a small coffee cart on the corner of Rangitikei Street in Palmerston North. From the beginning, our focus was simple: serve quality drinks, take pride in what we create, and provide an experience that keeps people coming back.
From those modest beginnings, Black Pearl has grown and evolved while staying true to the values that shaped us from day one. What started with coffee and bubble tea has developed into a distinctive dining experience, bringing together modern Asian flavours, handcrafted drinks, and warm hospitality.
Today, The Black Pearl Cafe is a place where different cultures, flavours, and people come together. We continue to refine what we do, introduce new ideas, and create experiences that feel both familiar and unexpected.
More than a decade after serving our first cup, our purpose remains unchanged: to create great food and drinks, genuine connections, and moments worth remembering.

2012 our first physical store in downtown
2012 — Finding Our Specialty
In 2012, we discovered what would become one of the defining parts of Black Pearl: bubble tea.
With growing support from our loyal customers, we took the next step in our journey and moved into Downtown Cinema in Palmerston North. Our new home was modest — just 30 square metres — but it was filled with energy, character, and the unmistakable spirit of Black Pearl.
The space may have been small, but our ambition was anything but. Every drink was made with the same care and passion that had inspired us from the beginning. Word spread quickly, and Black Pearl soon became a popular destination in Palmerston North, known for quality, creativity, and genuine hospitality.
As our community grew, so did the demand. The little shop was often buzzing with customers, and finding an empty seat became increasingly difficult. It was an exciting sign that Black Pearl was becoming something much bigger than we had first imagined.
Those early years helped define who we are today. They taught us that success is not measured by the size of a space, but by the experience created within it — and by the connections we build with every person who walks through our doors.
2014 Palmerston North store
2014 — A New Chapter
In 2014, Black Pearl took another important step forward, moving to 91 Broadway Avenue in Palmerston North. For the first time, we had a kitchen of our own — and with it came the freedom to explore a much bigger vision.
Black Pearl was evolving beyond bubble tea and coffee. We began developing a food menu centred around modern Asian fusion cuisine, combining quality ingredients, skilled techniques, and flavours inspired by culinary traditions from across Asia.
To bring this vision to life, we welcomed professional chefs into our team. Together, we began experimenting with different flavours, ingredients, and cooking techniques — respecting traditional Asian influences while giving our dishes a contemporary Black Pearl identity.
This new direction allowed us to offer something different: dishes that could feel familiar at first, yet introduce unexpected flavours, textures, and combinations. It gave our customers the opportunity to discover something new while still enjoying the warmth and comfort that had always been part of the Black Pearl experience.
The move to Broadway Avenue marked more than just a change of location. It was the beginning of Black Pearl as a complete dining destination — bringing together food, coffee, bubble tea, and hospitality under one roof.
It was here that the Black Pearl we know today truly began to take shape.
2022 Napier store
2022 — Black Pearl Comes to Napier
On 22 September 2022, The Black Pearl cafe reached another milestone with the opening of our second location in Napier.
We brought with us the Black Pearl experience that had grown over more than a decade — handcrafted coffee and bubble tea alongside our modern Asian fusion menu. While the city was new to us, our commitment remained the same: quality food and drinks, genuine hospitality, and an experience people would want to return to.
Napier quickly felt like home. We fell in love with the sea, the sunshine, and the character of the city, but most of all, with the warmth of its people. The support we have received from locals and visitors alike has been incredible, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who has welcomed Black Pearl into the community.
From a small coffee cart in Palmerston North in 2011 to two locations across the North Island, every step of our journey has been made possible by the people who have supported us along the way.
And our story is far from finished.
