The Black Pearl Cafe began in 2011 when Joey and Paul turned their shared passion for coffee and bubble tea into a vision for something new. They wanted to create a place where craftsmanship and creativity came together, where the comfort of coffee met the playful spirit of tea.
Their story started with a small coffee cart on the corner of Rangitikei Street in Palmerston North. Every cup was made with care, every interaction built a sense of community, and every day the dream grew stronger.
What began as a humble cart soon became a name that represents quality, culture, and connection. Today The Black Pearl Cafe continues to serve modern Asian flavors and hand-crafted drinks in an atmosphere designed for both comfort and curiosity.

2012 our first physical store in downtown
In 2012 we discovered what we did best, bubble tea. With growing support from our loyal customers we decided to take the next step and moved into Downtown Cinema in Palmerston North. The new shop was only about thirty square meters, yet it was full of energy, aroma and life.
The space may have been small, but our ambition was not. Every cup carried the same passion that started our journey, and word spread quickly. We became one of the most popular spots in town, known for quality, creativity and warmth. Every day we received amazing feedback, and there were never enough seats for everyone who wanted to come in.
Those early days shaped who we are today. They proved that success is not measured by size but by heart and the connection we create with every customer.
2014 Palmerston North store
In 2014 we moved to 91 Broadway Avenue in Palmerston North, marking an important step in our journey. For the first time we had our own kitchen, giving us the freedom to create and expand beyond drinks. We were no longer serving only bubble tea and coffee. Our vision grew into something broader, a menu built around modern Asian fusion cuisine crafted with high quality ingredients and refined techniques.
To bring this vision to life we invited professional chefs to join our team. Asian fusion cuisine blends flavors, methods and traditions from across Asia with global influences. It takes inspiration from one culture and enhances it with the ingredients and creativity of another.
This approach opened the door to new experiences for our customers, offering dishes that felt both familiar and surprising. It allowed us to introduce new tastes, textures and combinations that many had never tried before. It defined the character of The Black Pearl cafe as a place of creativity, comfort and culinary discovery.
2022 Napier store
On 22 September 2022 The Black Pearl cafe expanded to Napier, marking the beginning of a new chapter. We brought with us the same menu that had already proven its success, combining the familiar comfort of coffee and bubble tea with the freshness of modern Asian flavors.
Napier immediately felt like home. We love the sea, the sun and the warmth of the people here. The support from both locals and tourists has been incredible, and their kindness continues to inspire us every day.
